octopussy

I participated in the royal orgy today, watching the wedding on tv at work along with many of my unabashed female colleagues, and a few guys, too. Hey, we said, if the admin can reserve a conference room during work to watch the German match of the World Cup, let's see them try to deny us these few hours of pomp and romance.

Still, after all the waiting for the ceremony, the kiss, the carriage, etc., in the end it was those fantstical hats that stunned. This is apparently de rigueur in British fashion. There wasn't a bare female head - from frisbee-type contrivances, to whirly-twirlies, to psychedelic ostrich plumes, to birthday cakes, tacos and contraptions that look more like hat boxes than hats.

But if you watched I am sure you cannot but agree that Princess Beatrice whooped them all with her Dr. Seuss-like atrocity. I couldn't believe my eyes - this is a girl with a sense of humor. At least I hope that is the explanation, and not insanity or intent to do psychic harm.

I learned all manner of things about myself connected to that wedding today. I'm 30 years older than the night I spent to watch the OTHER royal wedding so long ago. Different priorities and heroes, I guess.

But those GIRLS (and seemingly everyone else there)! Now, I'm a woman who insists that every outfit I own make me grin or laugh out loud. I'm small and fit. Even I wouldn't don that blue mess with all that bosom and protruding abdomen and crumple at the side seam which must be the struggling zipper making its way across hips. Yike. Her sister ALMOST had me, until I saw the hat bow she must have yanked from some monument she passed in the streets. It made for an enjoyable morning!

I love those Philip Treacy hats, but you need a LOT of flair and self-possession to pull off the wackier ones. And when it comes to style, Eugenie and Beatrice seem to take after their mother. Maybe we should make Grace Jones queen for a bit.

Actually, I was just thinking of the hats, but the more I think about it, the more I think it's about time Grace Jones was queen. Why isn't she already? Someone get on it.

Yes, that hat would look much better on Grace Jones. I have now heard it compared to a uterus and fallopian tubes.

With hats, the crazier the better!

I never wear hats because I get the worst hat head, but a friend recently told me something revolutionary: I just have to decide to leave the hat on all day, and then I don't have to worry about hat head!

This is my favorite of all the commentaries that ever were on this wedding.
