I ordered this necklace today at Etsy after finding a small trove of acorns outside. The acorn has always been a kind of totem of mine. I grew up on a street in Plainfield, NJ lined with huge oaks. Every fall the neighborhood kids would hold acorn fights – one side of the street against the other. We’d go up down the street scooping up acorns, dodging behind and between trees.

I always loved the feel of acorns. Finding one with its cap on was better than a bare one, although you could find stray caps, too, and match-make. The prettiest ones were not to be thrown, but to be saved on the bedroom nightstand like little characters, like jewels or some wonderful, impossibly innocent money.

Cute necklace!

There weren't any oak trees on my street growing up so I always thought of them as exotic.

I know exactly what you mean about acorns. Between age 8 & 12 I was at a tiny progressive boarding school & I lived in a caravan in the grounds. It was under a huge old oak & the acorns in season would fall onto the tin roof like very slow rain≥ I used to pick out the best & arrange them in squads (families would have been too girlie) on my bookshelf.

Sorry - more post than comment!

valerie -
hard to imagine them as exotic!

dick, that's a great story.

acorns are apparently very evocative. When my daughter was small, she used the caps as teacups. That was girlie, too, and another good game of imagination.

I was in the habit of picking up and pocketing acorns too. I had a huge bowl of them on my desk until I discovered they had perfect little holes in them. Insects had crawled out and gone who knows where. Now I admire them, but let them stay put. Occasionally I kick the best ones into a spot that seems more likely to let them germinate. We have a lot of oaks in our neighborhood, but never enough.

Your silver acorn is beautiful.

I kicked a nice one home today. They bounce better than rocks. Love the idea of an acorn bowl. We do that with chestnuts but after a day they lose their luster.

I yesterday saw a huge pile of shattered acorn husks below a tree where the squirrels had been going at it.
