Things My Sister Taught Me

It's my sister's birthday - 45, and all her life a priceless font of information.

Things My Sister Taught Me

Without factories, there wouldn’t be clouds.

Bats live in the tree outside your bedroom.
They see better than anybody because they’re blind.

Sneeze, and your heart stops.

Thunder is the sound
of houses hit by lightning
crumbling.

Sing at the table
and you’ll marry a man
who beats you.

If in a dream
you dream
you die,
you die.

Hi Sarah,

I really like this. It's sweet without being sentimental or saccharin; perfectly short and simple without being trite. What a great birthday present. A few years ago, when my oldest sister turned forty, I wrote her a poem, and this poem reminds me that I hope she still has her copy, because I have no idea if and where I have it, yikes.

I know I've told you this many times before, but I just love your blog.

'Hope you're doing well.

That last one sounds so convincing! But, like most older-sibling truth, difficult to confirm.

If my younger siblings wrote a poem like this, they'd have some good material, too, I'm afraid.
