Epilogue, for if all is fat

Years ago I gave up reading
in bed at night
as a kind of laudanum

as an instrument towards sleep
which is an insult to oneself
and a slap at the writer.

My books are stacked
bedside for morning, opened
in the hope of waking up.

I save nighttime for dull tasks
like simple math
like operating heavy machinery.

Some kind of absorption seems to occur when I sleep with a book or two. Especially one I am reading again. They also make good poultices.

I like to read outside.

But now, of course, I am thinking of reading aloud on the train (if provoked)!
