my daughter returns from camp

There was a mouse in our room! And the beds were dirty. We ate breakfast too early, and then two hours later we had lunch and that was too early. And then we had to wait six hours for dinner! We were so hungry! And there was a pissoir in our room! And it stunk in there because there was some problem with the drainage.

Ah, memories are made of this.

Oh how hateful it is when you're young and out of control of your life.

At least, if you're lucky, you have a mother to whom you might come home and fill with your complaints.

What a cruel mother you are for sending her there.

They were only gone five days, but I missed them a lot. The first day I thought, "what have I done?" But my son went on and on, too, describing all the other boys who were there (it was only about 15 kids). He seems to have had fun, and my daughter did, too, -at least as much fun as you can have and still be cool- so that was a relief. I didn't have to feel all that cruel.

I remember years when I was working overseas meeting some American girls who described each European country they visited as "The pits".
